"Sampler" in fiber arts has a specific meaning which is often lost on people who think it's just a visual style; but a sampler was originally intended as a reference piece when people mostly didn't have regular access to things like printed patterns or pattern books; stitchers (let's be honest; mostly young women) would make a sampler with all the stitches they knew how to use and an alphabet (or two) to be used later as a pattern for future projects.
