Floriography, or the secret language of flowers, traces its roots back to 14th century Constantinople and the Turkish tradition of selam, which was sort of an object-poem. It exploded in popularity during the Victorian age when strong social taboos prevented people from expressing certain ideas out loud, so they were instead coded into "talking bouquets" or "nosegays". Many of the hidden meanings persist to this day, such as red roses for love, or lilies for death. Some are not as well known though, like these little yellow Tansy flowers, which meant "I declare war on you" or these purple monkshood flowers, which mean "an enemy is among us". Both of these flowers are highly toxic as well, which seemed particularly apropos for why I chose them.
My model stitch is done on 18ct oatmeal aida and displayed in a 6" embroidery hoop.
