The Dancing Baby from 1996 is the grandaddy of all internet memes. It predates most of the things that we associate with memes today, including the term "meme" to refer to things like virally shared videos (and this usage of "viral", for that matter!). It was probably the first instance of internet culture working its way into popular culture via its repeated appearances on the TV show Ally McBeal.
